Meet Olivia Felland

As a small (but mighty) team, we rely on the contributions of paid interns to accomplish our work. This week, we’re excited to welcome our new Council intern, Olivia!

Olivia (she/her/hers) is a student completing her final year at Hamline University studying History, Global Studies, and Nonprofit Management. She is currently a Lead Student staff member at the Hamline School of Business and a New Student Mentor at Hamline. Prior to interning at Charities Review Council, Olivia had internships at the Northfield Historical Society and the Minnesota Historical Society. After graduation, she hopes to continue working in the nonprofit sector in the Twin Cities and pursue a graduate degree relevant for nonprofit work.

As a Nonprofit Services Paid Intern, Olivia will serve as a supportive partner to our donors and nonprofits, helping donors make smart and informed giving decisions to strong and accountable nonprofits. As a member of the Nonprofit Services Team, Olivia will also be the first point of contact for new and renewing nonprofits learning about the Accountability Standards® and Accountability Wizard® nonprofit review process. Read on to learn more about Olivia, her connection to the Council’s work, favorite nonprofit causes, and more!

What excites you about joining the Charities Review Council team?

I’m excited to work with this team! Everyone has been so supportive and welcoming since I started last week and I’m looking forward to developing these relationships. Charities Review Council serves a unique role in the sector as both a nonprofit and a nonprofit supporter. So, I’m excited to learn both about the inner-workings of the Council and gain a deeper understanding of the nonprofits they support. Lastly, working for a small (but mighty!) team, I know I’ll have the opportunity to try new things and learn new skills. I’m looking forward to jumping in!

What are you most looking forward to in this new role?

I’m most looking forward to learning as much as I can about nonprofit missions, administration, communications, and about the Council’s Accountability Wizard® nonprofit review process and the role it plays in the sector. I am pursuing a minor in nonprofit management and I’m excited to bring what I’ve learned in the classroom to the table.

What is your favorite nonprofit or cause?

There are so many great nonprofits in Minnesota, but one of my favorites is Meets Standards® nonprofit, Cookie Cart. I think their mission to employ teenagers and give them meaningful work experiences is great and their cookies are so delicious. Win-win!

How have you seen nonprofits play a role in and/or show up in community?

Nonprofits are everywhere! During this uncertain time of COVID-19, they have shown up in
a big way. I know that my local Community Action Center’s food shelf in Northfield has
been delivering meals nonstop. Also, Meets Standards® nonprofit Second Harvest Heartland has prepared more meals than ever during this pandemic. Nonprofits are so essential to our communities and I’m thankful for the many services they provide.

When you’re not connecting with donors and nonprofits at Charities Review Council, what do you like to do for fun?

I love to read, particularly anything historical fiction. I also practice yoga, take my dog on
long walks, watch movies, drink coffee, and visit shops, museums, restaurants, coffee shops
as much as I can. Lastly, I enjoy traveling whether that’s in Minnesota or to England where
I just was for a semester abroad.

Last but certainly not least, what’s been your quarantine go-to activity?

My quarantine go-to activity is just being outside as much as I can whether it’s walking, biking or
sitting.

We’re thrilled to have Olivia with us this summer! Please join us in welcoming Olivia to the Council team by sending a quick note to olivia@smartgivers.org.
